First Shots from my Holga with Aperture Mod June 17, 2009 June 6, 2009 - by Jay Versluis. This is exciting: I've just scanned two rolls of film shot with my modded Holga 120SF! As I said yesterday, I always wanted a larger switchable aperture on Holga. Even in the slightest bit of shade, Holga pictures are too dark (that's 299 days of the. Holga Repair and Aperture Modificaiton: In this instructable, I completely disassemble my Holga 120CFN to remove a loose screw, and I add a smaller aperture as well. This modification has long been on my 'to-do' list of Holga mods. I've heard -- and now I don't remember where, but if I find it, I'll post the link -- that folks haven't had good results with opening up the aperture

Sidebar: the lens on a Holga 120 camera. Amusingly, Holga also specifies this lens as being f/8 on the Holga 120 camera, with selectable f/11 for sunny daylight use.In fact, the lens on those cameras has an aperture plate that restricts it to about f/13, which brings infinity into the depth of field on the 6x6 film camera. On older Holga 120s, the sunny/cloudy selector had no effect; the. I got this Holga 120S a while back and finally got around to trying some of the modifications that others have done to make them better cameras. So far this one has received the sunny-cloudy aperture mod and the stock 6x4.5 mask has been resized to 6x6. I've sprayed the interior surfaces with ultra flat black paint to minimize internal reflections A Holga 120 medium format plastic camera is all about simplicity. Purity. Inexpensive and fun. It doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles of modern cameras. This is definitely true when it comes to shutter speed. Shutter speed on a camera is about the length of time a shutter stays open. If it stays open a long time, a lot of light comes. Metering: None. Aperture: f/8 & f/11. Shutter speeds: 1/100 + B. EV (100ISO) : 13-14. Filter: Push on. The 120N is the most basic of the plethora of late 120 Holgas and is the closest to the original with no built in flash, plastic lens and limited settings and acts as the base for most 120 models. And boy ! did Holga make models - a vast.

The Holga plastic lens offers a real single aperture somewhere between f8 and f11 (some say f9-f13), a shutter speed of about 1/100 sec, and four focusing distances from close-up (say, 3ft) to infinity. In most situations, 400 iso, whether color or B&W, will be your best friend Light Painting is one of my favorite things to do with Lomography and analogue cameras. All you will need is some type of light like a flashlight, and a came.. Then I went to Freestyle's site and saw that the new Holgas already have a tripod socket and bulb feature. So now it's down to whether I want closer focusing (2-feet vs. 3-feet) and/or a second aperture (as the Holga Mod folk say the cloudy slide on the Holga doesn't really result in a wider aperture than the sunny setting There's not much to be found on a Holga. It's a medium format scale focus camera equipped with a wide 60mm f/8 lens and a rotary shutter that stays fixed at about 1/100th of a second. Newer Holgas have added one additional aperture setting and a bulb mode, but the basic design remains virtually unchanged from its early, austere self

Holga Repair and Aperture Modificaiton : 9 Steps

An Introduction to Holga Photography. The Holga is a camera, first manufactured in China in 1981, made almost entirely of plastic, some even have plastic lenses. It was an invention intended for the Chinese consumer as a low-budget, everyday kind of camera for capturing family photos and portraits, but has since gathered a cult following According to Holga Direct, the aperture of the Holga lens is f8, although it seems darker than that to me. The aperture is fixed, and I had to use ISO settings of between 1600 and 3200 to get a shutter speed fast enough to hand-hold the camera and avoid camera shake The holga has two apertures, f/8 and f/13. Unfortunately, there is a slight design fault due to which the smaller aperture is always used. Google holga mods to find out how to fix it. The latest 120n (& maybe others) actually have working apertures

The Holga Plastic Toy Camera. Randy is able to fix the aperture flaw creating two useable apertures. I also have Randy modify the lens to focus as close as 2 feet. Randy's 35mm modification allows me to shoot 35mm film resulting in a panoramic-style image in which the image flows right over the film's sprocket holes the fixed aperture for the holga is not f11, but f13-ish. You can take the aperture out (just a washer)and measure it. I'm in the process of putting a fully adjustable aperture into my holga. (From an old canon 50mm 1.8 - don't worry, it was full of fungus) Of course, only f6-ish -f22 will be of any use, as the shutter window in the holga is so. The Holga is a medium format 120 film camera, made in Hong Kong, known for its low-fidelity aesthetic.. The Holga's low-cost construction and simple meniscus lens often yields pictures that display vignetting, blur, light leaks, and other distortions. The camera's limitations have brought it a cult following among some photographers, and Holga photos have won awards and competitions in art and. Most Holga cameras use a single-piece plastic meniscus lens with a focal length of 60 millimeters and can focus from about 1 meter/yard to infinity. There is an aperture switch on the camera with two settings: sunny and cloudy.Due to a manufacturing oversight in early production cameras, this switch had no effect, giving the Holga only one true aperture of around f/ 13 — although these. It's only the exterior that is painted white; the interior is all black. One big difference between this one and the Holga I got back in 2009 is that this model has a working aperture switch, unlike the older versions. There's still plenty of 120 film to be found online The beauty of the Holga lies in it's imperfections. Light leaks, film not lying flat and of course even with the selector a constant f/8 or so aperture. The Holga allows for multiple exposures and if you unscrew the lens and remove the aperture disc, you can get about f/4, though don't expect any sort of sharp focus

Mar. 17, 2011. Otto Kitchens has found the perfect camera for an imperfect world: a plastic Holga. Although the black box with the lousy lens is dismissed by some as a distortion-prone, light-leaking toy, it is also beloved by Mr. Kitchens, who has embraced the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi: finding beauty amid everyday flaws Modified a Holga 120 Pan to use a Schneider Angulon 90mm f/6.8 (~108x24mm with the 135 mask). Built a 6×17 camera to use a Schneider Super Angulon 90mm f/8 MC (no 35mm yet but I will find a way) I've considered and avoided Widepans, Horizons and Noblexes, which leaves only one, well, two choices for purpose-built 35mm wide-format photography When these cameras only sell for $20, one can think of it in the same mind as a Holga, only you get sharp pictures, actual aperture control, and you won't be a trendwhore. (Yet) Oh yeah, and the automatic mode still works, as long as it doesn't decide that it needs to go down to the 1/40th range SUMMARY The Holga has an interesting reputation. Students, amateurs and some professional photographers consider the Holga more of an art camera than a practical shooter. The Cresta 3 offer 2 apertures. The consensus is that these are f/11 and f/16 but the camera is believed to be marked by Exposure Values (EV) not apertures. From what I've read most cameras are marked 12 & 13 which makes sense using 100 ISO film and with a 1/40 shutter (e.g f/11 & 1/40 = EV12 at 100ISO) The main problems were horizontal film scratches, huge light leaks that obliterated large areas of the image and ultra soft focus or even totally blurry images. I realised that my Holga didn't come with any film masks as I bought it 2nd hand from eBay so my 1st mod was to make my own mask which I guessed the size of by measuring the mask in. An Introduction to Holga Photograph

You could mod a 10 year old old Hasselblad/Mamiya/? 6x6 back onto a Holga but even those backs are still worth plenty of $ I think. Enough that you'd want a Hasselblad or a Mamiya to go with them. Lot of trouble when 'Hipstamatic' is $5 or so. ;). That said, I'd love to build a digital rangefinder camera from a 70s era rangefinder Step 1: Tools. There are only really a few tools needed to strip down a Lomo LC-A and you probably have most of them already. For this I used a cross-head jewelers screwdriver, size 00, a couple of flat headed ones, size 4 and 5, some handy tweezers for positioning screws, a couple of cotton buds, a bamboo skewer with one end cut into a screwdriver blade shape and some iso propyl alcohol The Holga really only has one shutter speed around 1/125 and the maximum aperture is somewhere around 13, so I had to shove a red filter with a filter factor of 5 on the front to get to the right amount of light. And although I was winging it on a crappy plastic camera, the exposure worked just fine and I was even surprised with the pictures.. On most consumer zoom lenses, the lowest aperture is typically f/3.5, while on prime and professional zoom lenses, it can be between f/1.2 and f/2.8. Once the aperture is set to the lowest value, take a picture of your subject and take a look at the rear LCD of your camera. The subject should be in focus, while the background is blurred The Holga Digital camera features original optics that are known for their dark corners and vivid colors. In addition, a lens adapter allows existing Holga lenses to be used with Holga Digital. It features F2.8 and F8.0 two-stop aperture settings, 4:3 and 1:1 aspect ratios, an 8MP 1/3.2 CMOS sensor, hot shoe, and tripod mount

Which brings me to the main drawback in Holga photography, the expense of developing and printing/scanning 120 film. The cheapest I can find is £10 for developing and scans, or developing and prints. Still with a prosumer DSLR costing £1000, you can afford a fair few films for that price Unlike the Holga HL-N, this lens is made primarily for the Diana F+ film camera, with the added plus that it can be used with an SLR with a simple adapter. However, on a full-frame DSLR the adapter/lens combination makes for a compact setup, with the f/11 aperture being part of the adapter itself

It was the first program that worked effectively as DAM and a RAW editor in one package. It was soon joined by Adobe Lightroom and together the two revolutionised the post-production workflows of many photographers. Sadly Apple decided to discontinue. A newcomer to photography is often daunted by the different exposure modes a camera may offer. In fact, there are only four, real exposure modes and these are often represented by the word PASM. PASM stands for Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual and can by found (not always in that order) on the exposure mode dial on top of your camera.
